Why won't my battery charge? Battery charging is a complex process and needs clever circuits that ensure that the battery is supplied power at the correct rate and monitor the battery temperature to prevent overheating. The mains adapter converts the domestic 230V AC power to 15-20V DC. Most laptops use 19.5V DC power. Smaller Sony laptops use 16V DC and older Toshiba laptops use 15V DC. It is very important to use the correct power adapter for the laptop. Using an underpowered adapter may cause the adapter to overheat and in some cases cause the laptop to switch off after a few minutes use. Dell adapters send a signal to the laptop to identify itself. Using an incorrect adapters will prevent the battery charging even if the laptop powers up. Batteries have a life of about 500-600 charge/discharge cycles - about 1.5 years usage. They gradually hold lesser amounts charge and eventually fail completely. Most laptop batteries need careful disposal - check labels. Battries which are near end of life and suffer a total discharge may stop charging completely. This can happen when the power socket fails or if there is a short circuit on the motherboard.
