Why do laptop DC jack power connectors fail?

The most common cause of power socket failure is excessive force being applied to the connector when the cable is yanked. This occurs when a connected laptop is dropped or if someone trips on the cable.

Damage to the DC socket pin can also occur when a small force is applied to the plug over long periods of time. This type of damage occurs when the laptop is used on mattresses, cushions or other soft surfaces. The jack is being pushed upwards and will eventually cause the solder joins to weaken or fail.

On some laptops poor design exacerbates the problem. The L-shaped plug is pulled by gravity to face downwards as the machine is placed on a flat surface. This pushes the DC jack inside the laptop upwards and again the solder joins weaken and fail.

Why do laptop DC jack power connectors get hot?

Weakened solder joins can make it difficult for the electricity to flow to the motherboard. In some cases the connectors start arcing. This can generate enough heat to melt plastic or burn the motherboard. It is important to disconnect the mains adapter and remove the battery ASAP because continued use can result in further damage to the motherboard, dc jack and plug. Stop using the laptop if you smell 'Electrical burn' near the power connector.
